Discover the World’s Largest Ice Cave!
The Eisriesenwelt Werfen is the largest ice cave in the world, with a total cave system extending over more than 42 km. The first section, about one kilometer long, is covered with impressive ice formations and open to visitors. As the cave is a protected natural monument, special care has been taken to preserve its natural state.
The Fascinating World of Ice
Through the massive cave entrance—20 meters wide and 18 meters high—you step into a mysterious world of ice. Beyond its vast dimensions, the cave amazes with crystal-clear ice palaces of breathtaking beauty. Monumental ice formations glisten dramatically in the light of the oil lamps handed out to visitors. As you explore, you’ll pass through winding corridors with names like „Kingdom of Diamonds“, taking you deeper into the mountain.
Guided Tours through the Show Cave
The Eisriesenwelt can only be visited with experienced guides from May to October. Visitors are led through the show cave on 75-minute guided tours, which include scientific and historical insights.
Getting There – Ride Austria’s Steepest Cable Car
From the visitor center in the valley, you can take a ride on Austria’s steepest cable car to reach the entrance. Even in summer, temperatures inside the cave remain below 0°C (32°F), so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential. A good level of fitness is also required, as visitors must climb 134 meters in elevation via numerous stairs inside the cave. But the silent beauty of the Eisriesenwelt makes every effort worthwhile!
