The life of the von Trapp family is inseparably linked to the city of Salzburg. Every year, around 300,000 people visit the filming locations of the movie The Sound of Music. The film was shot in 1964 after the immense success of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical in 1959. Both the musical and the film are based on the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Trapp.
The dramatic life of novice Maria von Trapp and her singing family became a worldwide sensation with the 1965 film adaptation, starring Julie Andrews. The songs from The Sound of Music are known all over the world.

After departing from Salzburg and crossing the German border, the private tour takes you directly into the Bavarian Alps to Obersalzberg. Here, you will transfer to specially equipped buses that will transport you along the 6.5 km (4-mile) long and 4-meter wide road with a 22% incline to reach the Eagle’s Nest. To access the former Hitler residence, you will walk the last stretch through a 124-meter-long tunnel inside the mountain, where a 124-meter-long elevator will then take you up to the Eagle’s Nest.

Your journey into the mountain is a journey through time – specifically through 2,600 years of salt mining on the Dürrnberg near Hallein. Dressed in the white miner’s suit, you’ll follow the trail of the “white gold” across four eras of salt mining in Salzburg. Your adventure begins with modern mining and present-day salt production, continues through the dark Middle Ages, and finally takes you back to the Iron Age to meet the Celtic miners. A raft ride over the mystical salt lake will transport you into the glittering world of Baroque Salzburg. By the end of your journey, you’ll understand why salt is still considered the essence of life. Oh, and along the way, you’ll cross the only underground national border between Austria and Germany, ride a mining train, and slide down two miners‘ slides deeper and deeper into the mountain.

Silent Night Museum in Hallein

Hallein is the second largest town of the Salzburg State. It is famous for the salt mine on the Dürrnberg, which was crucial for the economy, of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Hallein preserved its medieval character. Narrow streets and old town houses with hollow grove and gable roof. The parish church dates from the 13th century, now with a classical interior. Beside the Church, in the former house of the sacristan, is now located the “Silent Night Museum”.

Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of the famous Christmas carol „Silent Night“ lived for 28 years with his family in Hallein. In his residence is now the „Silent Night Museum“ where his personal possessions and the guitar of Joseph Mohr (the author of the text) are exhibited. In the Silent Night Archives, three original scores of „Silent Night“ and various other compositions of Gruber and his sons are preserved.

We start with a brief overview of the history of the folk song collection in Austria with a focus on Salzburg. Insights into historical song manuscripts and audio samples from field research recordings bring the history of rural popular music to life. Before we take a short coffee break, we visit the archive store of the Salzburg Folk Song Society.

After the break, song teacher Elisabeth Radauer will sing with us from old manuscripts in the archive of the Salzburg Folk Song Society. The song sheets can then be taken home for personal use.

Mozart Museums, Mozart’s piano and autograph collection

At the age of 17, Mozart and his family moved into the so-called Mozart residence (also known as the dancing master’s house). There, in the dancing master’s hall, we will have the opportunity to listen to Mozart’s piano, on which he played his concerts in Vienna and which came to Salzburg as a gift from his son Carl Thomas in 1856.

Then, we will have a guided tour of the museum and visit the autograph vault, which is not open to the general public; on display in the vault are selected original manuscripts by Mozart and his family.

After a short break, we walk together to Mozart’s birthplace and visit the exhibition in this second Salzburg Mozart Museum, both of which belong to the International Mozarteum Foundation.

St Peter’s Archabbey: Monastery, church, library and music archive

As the oldest monastery in the German-speaking countries, the Archabbey of St. Peter looks back on unbroken continuity in the heart of Salzburg’s old town. Monks have lived, prayed and worked here since 696.

As part of the tour, we visit the catacombs, the collegiate church and parts of the cloister as well as the library and the music archive.

The historic library room, the so-called cell library, was created in 1705/07 under Abbot Placidus Mayrhauser in the 7 cells that became vacant when the novitiate was relocated. The final artistic decoration took place in 1767/69 under Abbot Beda Seeauer.

Due to the contact with important Salzburg musicians, the music archive of St. Peter’s has an important collection of works by J. E. Eberlin, A. C. Adlgasser, L. and W. A. Mozart, J. M. Haydn, S. Neukomm, R. Führer and C. Santner.

The Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg not only had important buildings built, but also commissioned music from their chapel masters. The tour points out the connection between music and architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Visit Salzburg Cathedral, where Wolfgang Amadé Mozart was baptized, where he played the violin in the Hofkapelle, whose organ he played as chief organist of the Archbishop of Salzburg and for which he wrote most of his sacred music. However, musicians like Johann Michael Haydn, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Johann Ernst Eberlin wrote much more music for this church and were active there much longer than the city’s most famous son. Dive into the rich music history of this metropolitan church from the early 1700s with its musicians’ balconies and its organs. Afterwards, discover some of the fascinating musical sources in the nearby Archive of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, where the music collection of Salzburg Cathedral has been preserved.

We will take a break in the garden of the Archive, refreshments will be provided.

In addition to photographs and posters, objects from the costume and props collection tell of the Festival’s artistic highlights. During a guided tour of the Festival Archive, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Salzburg Festival.

The Grosses Festspielhaus, the Haus für Mozart and the Felsenreitschule form the Festival District, together with Cathedral Square and the Kollegienkirche, located 200 meters from them. In 1606/07, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had stables built here, to which a winter riding academy was added in 1662. During the 19th century, the complex was used as cavalry barracks before gradually being opened to the Salzburg Festival from 1925 onwards. A guided tour through the three festival halls not only provides an insight into the eventful history of the Salzburg Festival and the unique architecture of the festival complex, but also offers a glimpse of the stages and backdrops.
